Synopsis

When the cyclone finally drops her house, Dorothy Gale finds herself in the Land of Oz, where scarecrows dance, tin men sing and lions are scared of…everything. But through the help of her friends and a particularly ruby pair of slippers, Dorothy finds that there truly is no place like home.

This spring: find yourself on the yellow brick road, somewhere over the rainbow.

FAQS: ABOUT THE AUDITIONS

What is an audition?
Auditions are a chance for our students (new and veterans) to share their skills with our production team! At Open Arts Alliance we do our best to keep the auditions fun, simple and ensure that every auditioner feels great about their accomplishment! We want students to show us who they are- unique talents and all!

Who can audition for each show?
Students ages 6-18 are encouraged to audition for “The Wizard of Oz!”

I have enrolled for auditions. Does this mean my child is in the cast?
Unfortunately, we are unable to cast every child that auditions due to the number of applicants. Enrollment is strictly to help organize the process of auditioning.

Will there be callbacks?
We reserve the right to have callbacks for actors we need to see/hear act, sing or dance again on Friday, December 16th, 2022 at 6 pm.

How many casts do you anticipate?
We anticipate 1-2 casts of characters. Our effort is to ensure that students of different ages and levels are challenged artistically and enjoy the learning process.

What version of this show are you presenting?
There are many versions of “The Wizard of Oz!” We will be presenting the Royal Shakespeare Company’s adaptation.

  • By L. Frank Baum
  • With Music and Lyrics by Harold Arlen and E. Y. Harburg
  • Background Music by Herbert Stothart
  • Dance and Vocal Arrangements by Peter Howard
  • Orchestration by Larry Wilcox
  • Adapted by John Kane for the Royal Shakespeare Company
  • Based upon the Classic Motion Picture owned by Turner Entertainment Co. and distributed in all media by Warner Bros.

What is “The Wizard of Oz!” about?
Follow the yellow brick road in this delightful stage adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s beloved tale, featuring the iconic musical score from the MGM film. The timeless tale, in which young Dorothy Gale travels from Kansas over the rainbow to the magical Land of Oz, continues to thrill audiences worldwide.

What should my child prepare?
Each child must sing a small section of any song they desire. This should be a song they are comfortable with. Anything from “Happy Birthday” to “Let It Go” is great by us!

Can my child sing a song from the show?
Yes.

Should my child know the songs and characters from the show?
While this is not required, it can only help.

What is the rehearsal schedule?
Please see the practice and rehearsal dates listed on the page above.

What about costumes?
In an effort to minimize costume sharing, costumes will be identified/designed by the production team, but are the responsibility of participants and their families. Information on footwear and measurements to follow.

Are there fees associated with this show?
To offset the production cost, there is a fee of $775 for this production. The actual cost per child to run this program is approximately $1600 and we are able to subsidize all our students through the generous support of our donors. Learn more here.

Are there scholarships available?
Open Arts Alliance is proud that every single student who has ever wanted to participate has been able to do so thanks in part to the generosity of our community and board of directors. Need and merit based scholarships are available for every program. To inquire, please speak with a member of our faculty or staff.

Performances will take place at the historic Westport Country Playhouse (25 Powers Ct, Westport, CT 06880)
